Out of Character by Vuk Ćosić
The first solo exhibition in Scotland by this internationally recognised artist
Curated by Iliyana Nedkova
1 August – 1 November 2009
Open Monday to Saturday, 10am – 6pm or late on performance evenings. Admission always free
Threshold artspace , Perth Concert Hall, Mill Street, Perth PH1 5HZ, Scotland
Game Flags (2009)
A site-specific outdoors installation satirising the intersection of vintage computer games, colour field aesthetics and national symbolism. Commissioned as part of Players – an ongoing strand in the Horsecross collection exploring the relationship of contemporary art and gaming culture. Horsecross’ first commission of contemporary art for Perth city centre is sited on banner posts in the urban environment around the building which houses the Threshold artspace.
ASCII Wave (2009)
A multi-channel video installation as part of Ćosić’s ongoing project to translate culture from one obsolete format to another. Scenes from twenty classic films ranging from Workers Leaving the Lumière’s Factory Gates (1895) to The Matrix (1999) are converted into retro-futuristic moving images using ASCII code. Ćosić creates visual havoc by exposing ‘the ones and zeros’ of which popular cinema icons are made. Horsecross’ latest commission for Threshold Wave – an array of 22 flat, 40-inch screens dominating the artspace.
ASCII Unreal (2009)
A large-scale installation of Ćosić’s reworking of the seminal video game Unreal Tournament through streaming ASCII. Foregrounding text as the primary ingredient in the artist’s visual grammar, this work features extruded Cyrillic characters set adrift in darkened skies and unrecognizable letterforms shipwrecked in a sea of squiggly tildes. Acquired as part of Players for the Horsecross collection of contemporary art and showing at Threshold Stage as a large-scale wall projection.
History of Art for Airports and Toilets (2009)
An 8-channel video installation of Ćosić’s public signage poetics work. Compressing art history from Michelangelo’s La Pietà (1499) to Heath Bunting’s BorderXing Guide (2001–2011) the artist creates a new desktop iconography resonating with Brian Eno’s Music for Airports (1978). Acquired as part of Horsecross collection of contemporary art and showing at Threshold Flush – distributed flat screens in each of the public toilets.

Marketplace
April 26, 2009 at 1:16 pm in News No Comments
Peppers on display at the Women’s Market, Sofia. Photography Kevin Walsh.
ARC Projects hosts a presentation of artworks by a diverse range of artists over the period of a year. The concept is to provide a venue for the display and sale of a number of works, most of which have not been seen in Sofia before. Instead of showcasing solo exhibitions by gallery artists, ARC Projects will be showing limited edition prints, original drawings and paintings, and photographs by numerous artists within and outwith the gallery roster. The display will change on a regular basis over the course of the year.
Unlike previous ARC Projects exhibitions there will be no preview, no wine reception and no guest list because the idea is to have a long running display where visitors can call for an appointment to pop in and have a look.
The first iteration of Marketplace features artworks by Bulgarian and international artists, including including Alla Georgieva, Nina Kovacheva, Pravdoliub Ivanov, Ivan Moudov, Milena Putnik, Kosta Tonev, Valentin Stefanoff, Mare Tralla, Iva Vacheva.
Further details on the artists and artworks will appear here soon: bookmark this page for updates.

Horsecross is celebrating this spring having secured not one, but two, ambitious new
contemporary art exhibitions for its Threshold artspace at Perth Concert Hall and Perth
Theatre.
Life Story. A Scottish Episode is the first solo exhibition in a public institution in Britain by the internationally recognised Polish artist Izabella Gustowska. It opens to the public on Saturday 7 March 2009 and will continue at Threshold artspace in Perth Concert Hall until Friday 3 April 2009.
Acres Wild is the first ever solo exhibition by emerging Perth-based Polish artist Marek
Styczen. The show also opens to the public on Saturday 7 March 2009 and will run at Threshold artspace in Perth Theatre until Thursday 7 May 2009.
Both exhibitions are particularly relevant in this, Scotland’s year of Homecoming as they focus on the ever-changing migration of people between places and countries. Alla Georgieva – Tales of love, great and small
November 20, 2008 at 6:02 pm in News No Comments
Alla Georgieva, ‘Spring is here’, 2008, oil on canvas, 60 cm diameter
ARC Projects presents a solo show of new work by Sofia based artist Alla Georgieva. Originally from Ukraine, Georgieva is mainly known for her photography and video work. For this show, the artist has returned to painting after a decade exploring other media.
Conceived especially for ARC Projects the exhibition tests the boundaries of the concept of love. In this case, we see love through ‘invading’ the privacy of the infamous dictators Lenin, Stalin and Hitler. The use of classical painting techniques is a conscious reference to the aesthetics of the period from the 1930s to the 1950s, when these political figures were at the height of their power. The artist recreates her characters with a romantic ambience, depicting supposedly intimate scenes in hues of blue and pink. In doing so, Georgieva skirts along the edges of kitsch, and borrows decor and compositional devices from popular culture.
Exhibition extended by popular demand:
22 November 2008 – 31 January 2009
Preview Friday 19 September 2008 7 – 9pm
Exhibition open Wednesday – Saturday, 3 – 8 pm
Gallery festive closure 21 December 2008 – 6 January 2009

4th Floor, 90 Vitosha Boulevard

The exhibition features seven new paintings, plus a photographic installation inspired by two neighbourhoods – the artist’s own in Novi Beograd, and her adopted one along Sofia’s Vitosha Boulevard.

Intermission at Threshold artspace
September 11, 2008 at 9:00 pm in News No Comments
INTERMISSION
curated by Iliyana Nedkova
Threshold artspace
Perth Concert Hall, Horsecross, Mill Street, Perth
15 September – 10 November 2008
In his unassumingly brilliant film Dial M for Murder (1954), Alfred Hitchcock uses the intermission as a suspense device intensifying the thrill of the perfect murder drama. In this exhibition contemporary artists with diverse attitude to the cinematic, approach the intermission as an opportunity to dwell upon our perceptions of abstract and conceptual art – art which is almost embedded into the urban architecture all around us.
View 11 short 22-channel artists’ works showing in a cinematic loop which cycles every hour. These artists’ films and videos were commissioned and acquired as part of the permanent Horsecross collection of contemporary art between 2005-07.
