Iliyana Nedkova, in her capacity as Creative Director (New Media) at Horsecross – the organisation set up to manage Perth’s concert Hall and theatre – unveiled on 24 November new celestial and terrestrial digital experiences for the festive season at Threshold artspace.

The exhibition features two exclusive Horsecross commissions: From Our Own Correspondent, political cartoons from London, Paris, Venice, Istanbul, Athens and Perth by world-renowned artist Dan Perjovschi; and The Moon and the Oceans, capturing the lunar-tidal journey from crescent to crescent, by international artists trio Henna Asikainen, Silvana Macedo & Reza Tavakol.

Also featured are two Scottish premieres: Asteroids, one of four interactive titles by artists Simon Robertshaw, Onno Baudouin and Peter Appleton presented as a taster for the forthcoming exhibition Players – a season of computer games and sound toys by independent artists; and finally CosmicSky, a specially built hi-tech planetarium by Gill Russell, Francisco Diego and Brian Hill merging the languages of cinema, astronomy, art, poetry and philosophy.

Curating at the Scottish Parliament

The Scottish Parliament

Crossworlds is to be unveiled at the Scottish Parliament on 30 November 2005. The first exhibition in the UK by young Bulgarian photographer Vera Raycheva, it captures the faces, streets, shores and sunsets of Scotland and Bulgaria.

This is the latest in a series of cultural events co-curated by ARC Co-director Iliyana Nedkova in her capacity as Honorary Cultural Attache to the Bulgarian Consulate. The exhibition celebrates the forthcoming accession of Bulgaria to the European Union in 2007. Following the showing at the Scottish Parliament, the exhibition will tour to the Foyer Gallery, University of Abertay, Dundee in December 2005 and the British Council Sofia in January 2006.

This text is based on a presentation ARC Co-director Chris Byrne made at a Hothaus seminar, organised by Vivid at the University of Central England, Birmingham. It outlines his experiences and thoughts around curating digital and networked art projects and their relationship to the locations where they were made and presented. It is soon to be published in a book, The Hothaus Papers: Paradigms and Perspectives in Media Arts edited by Joan Gibbons, a Vivid Publication in association with Article Press, Birmingham.

Dorkbot Alba

Dorkbot Alba audience

ARC Co-director Chris Byrne has been busy organising the first ever Dorkbot Alba event on 13th November in the Forest Café, Edinburgh.

Dorkbot Alba is the Scottish branch of Dorkbot, a global movement of small, autonomous gatherings with a similar goal: offering a platform to artists, designers, scientists, nerds, students and others who let themselves be inspired by technology.

The speakers were Richard Brown, Zoë Irvine, Martin Ling, and Pete Hindle.
